He was in sound shape, with dove-tailed drawers and all, but a little tattered around the edges.
And boy was he stinky.....he must have lived a long time in a smoker's house.
I cleaned him up and sprayed him with some smell good.
Yes, I soaked the wood on the insides of the drawers to get the smell out.
Then we got to work. I used Behr Blue Jewel in Satin and made my own chalk paint.
I apologize now because the color does not show up the same with any camera in my house and I am so bummed because the color is gorgeous. It is a deep tealish blue, but shows up alot lighter and more blue, less teal.
I used oiled bronze spray paint on the hardware. Loooove! This picture is the closest to the correct color, but it is still deeper.
I love the way this turned out. The teal color is gorgeous! Great job! Thanks so much for sharing at the All Star Block Party!

Wow, this little guy turned out amazing! Can you share how you made your chalk paint, Please!?! Jamie @ wellnessandfamily.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteI just mix in about a 1/4-1/2 a cup of plaster of paris in with half of the quart of paint and add a few drops of water. If you are working outside in the heat, it might thicken up and you can just add a few more drops of water.
DeleteVery nice!
ReplyDeleteYour end table turned out really pretty! My hubby is just the same. I've learned that "It's nice," is a compliment from him. When he doesn't say anything, I know he hates it!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy I found this! I have a bedroom set we bought for $50 at a yard sale. I love the lines of it, but it is that awful '50's dreary brown. I am scared to death to paint it, but now that I've seen your night stand I'm feeling much braver. I, too, would like some more details on how exactly you did it. Do you have a tutorial somewhere on that? I tend to use a lot of purples and only the big heavy Canon that is always buried in the closet captures the right purples. They usually look blue in photos. My husband is a very good sport about it all, but just this last weekend when I pulled something out of the trash to make into something crafty he told me I was spending too much time online. He said it with a smile, but I think I saw serious concern in his eyes. Haha! We're going to move soon so I am having to part with "treasures" I haven't had the time (or the nerve) to rejuvenate or repurpose. I hope our new location has great yard sales and second hand stores like we have here in Tulsa.
ReplyDeleteI just mix in about a 1/4-1/2 a cup of plaster of paris in with half of the quart of paint and add a few drops of water. If you are working outside in the heat, it might thicken up and you can just add a few more drops of water. No priming, just paint it on. Usually about 2 coats covers it all. I use a foam roller for the big straight parts and this leaves a very smooth surface. After it dries, distress with sand paper, heavy grit for the edges. You may need to use a fine grit 220 for the tops and sides to just smooth out. Then I apply a coat of Annie Sloan Clear wax and right after I apply some Annie Sloan Dark wax and wipe off. After it dries, I buff with old t-shirts and it is done.

ReplyDeleteAwesome makeover! I need to find some of the smells good you mention. I made the mistake of buying a couple of organizing pieces that came from a smoking house but didn't notice until I got them home. Now I can't use them because anything that goes into the drawers comes out reeking of smoke. Will keep my eye out for something to use though. Thanks so much for sharing at Etcetorize this week~
ReplyDeleteIt is better than "nice;" It is fabulous. Why? Your recycled an old "ugly, stinky" piece into a fresh, new, lovely bedside chest. I love it!
